I have always been passionate about self-development and love learning new skills, it’s probably why I’ve stayed in the learning and development sector for so long. Throughout my career, I’ve constantly sought out new challenges for my own growth, and I’ve also found great satisfaction in helping others develop their skills and find new purpose in their careers.
A year ago, I had a steady job with a reliable income. Although I had nearly 30 years of experience in training and development, along with a senior management position, I found myself in a rapidly evolving world where I needed to adapt. Suddenly, I was learning everything from website design to marketing and especially AI. I loved being back in the learning mindset and quickly remembered how exciting it feels to develop new skills. Thankfully, I have always tried to keep my skills up to date, especially with technology, and it has given me a buzz to know that whatever your age, you can still love learning and reinvent yourself.
Why Continuous Professional Development Matters
The job market is evolving at an incredible pace. Technologies change, industries adapt, and new skills become essential almost overnight. Staying ahead isn’t just about keeping your job, it’s about staying relevant, competitive and confident in your abilities.
I Love this statement "I don't know everything"
Have You Ever Felt Left Behind in Your Career Because You Haven’t Kept Your Skills Up to Date?
Even with years of experience under your belt, have you ever found yourself struggling to keep up because you didn’t stay on top of industry changes? Maybe you’ve been in the same role for years, feeling comfortable in your routine, until one day, you realise the industry has moved on without you. Or perhaps new technologies and updated processes have made you feel out of your depth, frustrated, and unsure of what to do next.

I’ve seen this happen to so many professionals, and it’s a stark reminder of how crucial continuous learning is. It’s not just about climbing the career ladder, it’s about maintaining confidence in your skills and keeping a sense of purpose. So, are you actively keeping your skills sharp, or do you feel like you’re falling behind?
How CPD Can Transform Your Career
When I finally took the plunge and invested in my own professional development, everything changed. I started self-teaching, diving into podcasts, and enrolling in online courses. Almost immediately, I felt more engaged and motivated. Soon, I was applying new skills in my work, contributing more in discussions, and even feeling bolder about seeking out new opportunities.

What I’ve also realised is how transferable skills are. The expertise I gained in leadership, communication, and strategy through my previous roles has been instrumental in adapting to new challenges. Whether it’s marketing, website development, or navigating AI, my foundation in training and development has given me the confidence to embrace change and apply what I know in new ways. Every skill you’ve gained in the past can be repurposed in ways you might not have expected, making career shifts and industry changes more achievable than they seem.
Here are a few reasons why CPD is a game changer:
Boosts Confidence – Learning something new reminds you of what you’re capable of and helps you tackle challenges with fresh energy.
Increases Employability – Employers love candidates who show initiative and a commitment to growth.
Opens New Doors – Many people land promotions or career changes simply because they invested in their learning.
Keeps You Up to Date – The world isn’t standing still, and neither should your skills.
Making CPD Work for You
The best part? Professional development doesn’t have to mean going back to university or spending a fortune. It could be as simple as:
Taking an accredited online course
Attending workshops or industry events
Reading books and listening to podcasts related to your field
Networking and learning from others in your industry
Seeking mentorship or coaching to develop new perspectives
